CORALVILLE, Iowa, January 24, 2006 — As the fourth largest personal auto insurer in the country, GEICO continues to look out for motorists in Iowa with a set of handy winter driving tips.

According to Dina Pon, general manager of GEICO's Coralville branch office, "We want to prepare motorists for the dangerous winter driving conditions. We hope the worst weather is behind us, but winter's not over yet."

Clear the ice and snow from all car windows and lights. Good visibility is essential to a safe ride.
If you think the road conditions might be bad, allow extra time for your trip. You won't have to rush and you can concentrate on getting there safely.
When driving in bad weather, always reduce your speed well in advance of an anticipated stop. Pump your brakes gently to stop. Jamming the brakes will cause the wheels to lock and your car to skid.
If your car starts to slide, do not brake. Take your foot off the accelerator and turn your car in the direction of the skid until it straightens out.
If you drive a front-wheel drive car, don't allow your car's good handling characteristics to make you over confident in bad weather. Your car may get through snow with less slides and skids than a rear-wheel drive car. However, it can't stop any faster than the other cars on the road.

Drive with your headlights on when it's snowing or raining so you can be seen more easily by other drivers.

Carry emergency equipment such as flares, a shovel, a bag of sand, and a hat, gloves and blanket in the trunk of your car in case your car gets stuck.
If you're planning a long trip in potentially bad weather, pack some food and bring some water. You never know when winter will make a long trip an even longer, very hungry and thirsty one.
